The station is crewed by 10 retained (part time) personnel.
Each member of the station carries a pager which is activated by the equipment in the office, on a signal from the control room in Johnstone when they are required to turn out to an incident. As there is no defined shift pattern in the retained service, each member is basically on call 24 hrs per day, 365 days per year. Day or night, at home or at work they respond to that pager. The last few years have seen the number of calls in excess of 300 annually
As well as covering Maybole, the station area extends to the surrounding villages of Crosshill, Straiton, Kilkerran, Culzean and Maidens, but the appliance also backs up the station areas Girvan, Dalmellington and southern section of Ayr

The crew attend the station every Monday evening for a training period of 3 hours, 7.00 - 10.00pm, this after a days work at their primary employment. Besides training in basic firefighting, all firefighters are trained in the wearing of Breathing Apparatus and Road Traffic Accident rescue equipment, with 2 firefighters having attended an RTA operators course at the Scottish Fire Brigades Training College near Edinburgh. 4 firefighters are qualified as appliance drivers and 2 are qualified to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) standard.

The firefighters receive 4 weeks paid annual leave, rising to 5 weeks after 5 years service

The minimum age for joining the retained service is 18.
